    Looking back on this telescoping of time, one wonders if the government or du Pont company would have pushed ahead with plans for mammoth plants had they fully appreciated the nature of the unknown territory which the scientists were then exploring. Perhaps this was a good illustration of the saying: ‘Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise’. (R. E. Lapp, ‘Atoms and People’, ch.
